Choose a Dehumidifier by Capacity and Drainage

A dehumidifier decision has two parts: selecting an appropriate moisture-removal capacity and confirming that the drainage method will actually work in the space.

Quick decision

Capacity and water handling are separate checks.

  1. Identify the room or area and how damp it is before dehumidification.
  2. Compare pints per day and IEF.
  3. Check whether a tank, gravity hose, or pump is physically workable.
  4. Compare product archetypes only after capacity and drainage are clear.

The tank stores collected water. Pints per day describes moisture-removal capacity under specified test conditions.

Start with the space and its dampness condition. Then compare pints per day and IEF. After that, decide whether you will empty a tank, use a gravity drain hose, or need a model with a pump.

Avoid this shortcut: treating pints per day as the same thing as tank capacity.

01 · Space and dampness

Start With Space and Dampness

ENERGY STAR explains that capacity is the amount of water removed in 24 hours under specified conditions, and that the capacity needed depends on both space size and conditions without dehumidification.

Two similarly sized spaces can have different moisture conditions and different practical drainage options.

02 · Capacity

Compare Pints per Day and IEF

  1. Space + dampness
  2. Pints/day + IEF
  3. Drainage feasibility
  4. Product archetype
MeasurementMeaning
Pints/dayPublished moisture-removal rate
Tank capacityCollected-water storage
IEFPublished energy-efficiency measure where available

Keep published capacity, IEF, tank capacity, continuous drainage, and the actual drain path as separate questions. A dehumidifier is not a substitute for diagnosing water intrusion, plumbing leaks, or building conditions.

03 · Drainage

Decide How Water Will Leave the Unit

Tank

A tank can suit a space where manual emptying is practical. Confirm bucket removal, capacity, and full-tank shutoff.

Gravity drain hose

A gravity hose needs a drain route lower than the hose connection and suitable for the manufacturer’s instructions. Do not assume a hose alone makes continuous drainage possible.

Midea Cube manual

Pump

A pump-equipped model may be relevant where gravity drainage is not workable, but follow the specific model instructions and installation conditions.

04 · Product archetypes

Compare storage and drainage separately from capacity.

Compact storage-oriented archetype

Midea Cube 20-Pint

Public US retail information describes a compact/nested configuration, a published 20-pint class, and drainage-hose capability. Compare storage considerations separately from removal capacity and drainage feasibility.

Gravity-drain instruction archetype

Midea Cube 35-Pint

The model MAD35S1QWT manual provides model-specific drainage instructions. Use it to verify drainage feasibility against the installation setup, not just product features.

Evidence & disclosure

CDC advises keeping indoor humidity as low as possible and no higher than 50 percent while addressing moisture sources such as leaks. This guide does not claim a dehumidifier removes mold, repairs leaks, fixes structural moisture, or permanently achieves a particular humidity level.
